She speaks engagingly about areas where her life as a mother and foster mother intersect with her role as a physician. Some keynote topics include traumatic brain injury, eating disorders and other mental illness, and the current state of the foster care system.

Her writing workshop topics have included but are not limited to crafting the personal essay, writing about family, the transformative power of words, building your platform, affecting social change through narrative, and how to jump-start a side career as a writer.

Carolyn recently became the Writer-in-Residence at the Lawrence Family Medicine Residency program. She offers workshops on topics in Narrative Medicine to medical schools, residencies, universities and corporations.
