Keynote Speaker and Workshop Leader

In addition to writing and publishing books and essays, Carolyn is also a sought-after keynote speaker and writing workshop leader. Some of her more high-profile venues include Harvard University, the University of Iowa’s Carver College of Medicine, the Brain Injury Association of America, Grub Street, the Muse and the Marketplace, and the University of Massachusetts Medical School.

She speaks engagingly about areas where her life as a mother and foster mother intersect with her role as a physician and include traumatic brain injury, eating disorders and other mental illness and the current state of the foster care system.

Her writing workshop topics have included but are not limited to crafting the personal essay, writing about family, the transformative power of words, building your platform, affecting social change through narrative, and how to jump-start a side career as a writer.
